ABSTRACT

This chapter examines outdoor education pedagogical practice in UK higher education (HE). It also examines outdoor pursuits fieldwork in HE, and addresses issues such as health and safety policies, transport, staff qualifications, staff–student ratios and strategies for differentiating teaching. HE programmes will contain a balance between indoor/classroom/lecture room teaching and outdoor teaching. Many geography, earth and environmental science UK HE programmes offer field courses abroad, and interviews with staff make clear that these play an important role in the marketing, recruitment and retention of students. Many HE providers offer an expedition module, or options within modules or the programme for students to develop an expedition plan or to undertake an expedition, either independently in small groups, or led by university staff. HE providers will work with the university's health and safety staff to write and update their health and safety policy documents. Students are represented on the programme Health & Safety Committee, which forms part of the Student Council.
