ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part offers broad views of how outdoor studies is interpreted and presented in countries around the world. It provides a voice to national approaches and how the outdoors makes sense in these cultural contexts. The part explores how problems in society can be addressed through outdoor studies. It explains how the culture of friluftsliv in Norway, touristic in the Czech Republic and the outdoor curriculum in Singapore are portrayed is evidence of how culture is explanatory. Culture can be embodied in language, art, religion, ritual, and customs. The challenges relate to language, understanding the value of the outdoors within history and culture, and documenting the impact of outdoor studies in both cultural and globalisation terms. Language is the translations and meanings that are associated with outdoor studies.
