ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the process involved in lesson planning and enables to plan successful and effective religious education (RE) lessons. It describes how and why lesson planning and evaluation are important parts of the teaching process. The chapter also explores the differences between long-term planning, medium-term planning and short-term planning. It focuses on what is meant by lesson objectives and learning outcomes. The chapter explains how to plan structured lessons that put pupils' learning at the centre of the teaching. Lesson objectives are to do with what the teacher hopes pupils will achieve or learn by the end of the lesson/unit of work/programme of study. Learning outcomes are to do with how pupils will demonstrate what they have learnt. The main body of the lesson consists of a series of mini connected episodes. Each episode might contain a different teaching strategy or different learning activity.
