ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about the secret of effective discipline. It shows how to be consistent with discipline. One of the best-kept secrets of the most effective teachers is that they have very few discipline problems. The chapter shows how to relieve stress with psychology. The most effective teachers are the ones who seem to be the least stressed and to have the fewest discipline problems. The chapter offers two examples of how teachers can use positive techniques to deal with students who are off-task. It shows how to be self-disciplined, and describes two very different reactions to a student's misbehavior. Students who feel good about themselves are much less likely to misbehave than those who do not. Teachers are trained to look for problems their students are having: reading deficiencies, behavior problems, special education issues, and so forth. On the flip side, teachers are not always trained to look for the good in children.
