ABSTRACT

Choreography can be the dynamic and spectacular or it could be the minute and precise. Round/By/Through exercise asks participants to create a string of material that has them moving all about and through their partner. This is one of a series of exercises that are useful in the initial stages of developing movement skills and material. As such, it should be considered in terms of providing a series of building blocks, both as a principle and as a practice. As a group of exercises they share a common principle, which is that, for the most part, they should be attempted as neutrally as possible. Unison movement is fraught with dangers ranging from the creative process to the final performance. The results can be impressive but if it is not absolutely nailed it can be a law of diminishing returns as presenting unison movement does an interesting and potentially damaging thing to an audience.
