ABSTRACT

The author had a problem with the term Challenging Behaviour when used to describe the behaviour of a child with a neuro-physiological condition: it suggests that the child has a choice. Sensory overload and extreme anxieties arising from the need to meet demands within the time given in a pressurized environment, such as at school, are the conditions under which pupils on the spectrum are trying to function and sometimes they just cannot cope. Most people have heard of the term meltdown in relation to Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC). However, there is also known as Shutdown or Autistic Catatonia, which is serious condition. Self-evaluation is a natural part of the education process and author believes that recognizing a mistake and the need to modify our actions and behaviour is half way to solving the problem. This is especially true when working with pupils with Asperger Syndrome (AS) who may not react in the way you might expect.
