ABSTRACT

In many subjects the pupil will have to be able to discriminate between images that give different information. Pupils with Asperger Syndrome (AS) may have difficulties with time, place, fact and fiction, and they can be very confused when given images to comment on. They should be taught how to interpret visual images, especially those used in high stakes examinations. In History a painting or a photograph may present an idealized portrait or a satirical representation of a character or an event. Cartoons are often used, and the tendency to interpret words and images literally can lead to confusion. In Geography the images are usually 'stating the obvious', but the pupil may be captured by the detail, not the whole picture. In English Language they may have to discriminate between images being used to inform and those used for advertisement purposes, to persuade.
