ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on the available evidence drawing heavily on the findings from the National Union of Students' Hidden Marks survey, and also Phipps and Young's work on 'lad culture'. 'Lad culture', a subculture at best tolerant and at worst actively supportive of male violence against women, is common in universities, and particularly linked to sport and alcohol. Most of the attention on violence against women students tends to be focused on sexual assault and on violences in public spaces, but universities are also a place at which young women might be entering into their first serious long-term relationships and even moving in with partners. Despite the relative lack of research into violence against women in higher education institutions in the UK, there do exist some responses though these are mainly at the stage of raising awareness of the problem and stages of policy development. The chapter shows that a range of violences against women are prevalent on university campuses.
