ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that performances of foreigners are less about teaching Chinese about foreign cultures, and more about presenting to Chinese audiences an image of a revitalized China at the centre of world civilization. Typically, the hosts stressed singing as a metaphor for happiness, friendship and the creation of a small world unified through music. The Chinese names of foreigners play an important role in creating a positive impression of their dedication to China. As a result of effective place-based marketing in reform-era China, mention of Guizhou province immediately gives rise to an image of colourful and happy minority nationalities. Pre-introduction song and dance acts highlighted the 'colourful' flavour of the programme. During China's Olympic year there were variations on the theme of presenting foreigners from around the world happily together on Chinese soil, with several 'softer' depictions of foreigners' attraction to China.
