ABSTRACT

In this handbook we wanted to offer a comprehensive and systematic overview of the evolution of the main network industries from three perspectives: the perspective of the industry into which infrastructure sectors are rapidly evolving; the perspective of policy and regulation; and the perspective of the firms operating in these industries. This is, to our knowledge, the first such systematic overview. In this conclusion, we will proceed in two steps: first, we will look at each of the network industries separately and try to crystallize the most striking issues as they emerge when one compares, or at least looks at, these three perspectives together. Subsequently, we will consider the three perspectives separately and identify the most striking features in terms of industry evolution, policy and regulation, and firm strategies when taking into account all of the network industries covered in this book.
