chapter  8
Behavioral Interventions for Perinatal Anxiety
Pages 25

The behavioral activation interventions described in the previous chapter represent just one set of behavioral strategies from which cognitive behavioral therapists draw. In this chapter, we describe behavioral strategies that are primarily targeted toward anxiety. We begin with a description of relatively straightforward behavioral exercises that can help perinatal women manage anxiety in any one moment. We then turn our attention to a discussion of how avoidance of intrusive thoughts, triggers for intrusive thoughts, and reminders of childbirth or other trauma perpetuate anxiety, as well as strategies for overcoming this pattern of avoidance.
