ABSTRACT

The processes discussed in the previous chapter can all be characterized by the fact that, in general, they led to unmetricized and qualitative phenomena of figural segregation and organization. In this chapter, I consider a family of

perceptual processes that, though similar in many ways to those encompassed within the Level 3 rubric, differ substantially in their outcomes. Level 4 processes typically induce quantified experiences (i.e., they lead to perceptual experiences that allow us to make judgments of the value of magnitude, quality, space, and time) rather than only qualitative differences in figural organization or regional discriminations . In other words, all Level 4 phenomena are capable of being scaled along perceptual dimensions in a way that was not, in general, possible with the outcomes of Level 3 processes.
