ABSTRACT

The regeneration of metropolitan cities of Europe in relation to intelligent city planning highlights how larger cities are adopting this new paradigm and how the deployment of broadband networks, smart spaces, Web applications, and e-services is helping every city to become more innovative and efficient in resources and environmental sustainability. The evolutionary course from digital to intelligent cities, which can be found in the literature, is also being replicated in the processes that are taking place in every city. The digital life of cities starts in hyperspace, but it soon becomes embedded into the social life and the physical environment of cities, empowering people and advancing innovation. An irreversible current is driving cities from digital applications to smart ecosystems and intelligent places.
