ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses on how instructional leaders and early childhood teachers can support the implementation of the CCSS for young children in grades K-3 and how families can be involved in the implementation of the standards at home and in school. It also discusses the importance of involving families in their child's education and how school leaders can facilitate the home-school relationship. Additionally, it is clear that implementing the CCSS in the early school years is important for providing the foundational skills that children will need later to be college- and career-ready. The balance between academics and social development in the early years continues to be a challenge for K-2 teachers. The ultimate responsibility for ensuring that children master the knowledge and skills in the standards rests with school leaders, teachers, families, and the community. The chapter begins with Katie's journey from traumatic brain injury to life as a first grader in a small rural school.
