ABSTRACT

Proyecto Caracas Memorabilia is a collaborative non-commercial initiative that aims to offer a reconstruction of the history of pop music in Caracas, Venezuela. It is important to highlight that we use the term pop instead of popular to avoid confusion with Venezuelan popular traditional music and particular rhythms. The term "pop" is used in a broad sense to cover the genres of music that originated in or have been developed in the United States since the 1950s. Proyecto Caracas Memorabilia specifically aims to document the history of pop music in Caracas between 1980 and 1999. Before the spread of the Internet, it was harder to find out about bands from the regions but between 1983 and 1999, Caracas bands were widely known across Venezuela. Like the short-lived bands, venues also keep disappearing in Caracas, so the forum is a site that works to preserve memories of Venezuelan popular music culture.
