ABSTRACT

Editions of You certainly fit the remit of what has become known as the radical or activist archive. This chapter describes how the project Editions of You emerged, its contents, day-to-day practical problems of its running and the larger curatorial issues it presents, and finally how its value as a resource or network might be accessed and shared. The Editions of You artists speak variously of political concerns but also of a desire for intimacy or closeness with their audience; for the fulfillment of crafting and making things; for non-audible aspects of the musical release to be as carefully attended to as the music; and for physical presentation to reflect the themes or concepts of the music or be a constituent element of a holistic artwork. The Editions of You website summarises the project as "celebrating and showcasing self-publishing and self-releasing musicians and the handmade editions and releases they create".
