ABSTRACT

The Malta Music Memory Project (M3P) was launched in 2010 to address the need for a cohesive multimedia database of Maltese music and associated arts. There are no large-scale collections of Maltese music anywhere in the world. Specialised collections containing elements of traditional folk music or a few types of popular mainstream releases exist, but these are either in stand-alone private collections or not fully accessible to the public. While music has been selected as the primary focus for the database, it is inclusive enough to not exclude any other aspect of everyday life directly or indirectly associated with music. The M3P continues to pull together the voluntary resources of collaborative contributors while ensuring appropriate standards of digital curation and giving due attention to intellectual property rights matters. Work on the preservation and cataloguing of Maltese music on CD continues, because the format is not obsolete yet and a substantial number of new CD releases continue to appear quite regularly.
