ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the Eco-socialist discourse and influence during a period in which capitalist environmental politics as a market failure, even by mainstream economists such as Lord Nicholas Stern. The eco-socialist discourse promotes the image of climate science as an authority which revealed the destructiveness of industrial capitalist society and compelled extensive and immediate changes in basic economic structures, relationships, lifestyles, transport and energy systems, and forms of production in contemporary capitalist society. The mobilization that occurred in relation to issues such as climate justice actually had a great impact in the overall debate. The central idea for green socialists in Sweden that the problem of climate change could not be resolved without creating a different economic system. The green socialism discourse also included a harsh criticism of a naive Green Keynesian discourse that said it could internalize climate considerations within the dominant economic model, which based on the hope of lowering greenhouse emissions simultaneously with economic growth.
