ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the events of 11 September 2001 and their aftermath influence new developments in spy fiction as a popular genre. In many ways post-9/11 relations between Pakistan and the US appear to rehearse a familiar script, the deterioration of cooperation, the charges of mendacity, and the breaches of sovereignty also force 'covert' activities out into the open and publicize them more broadly and immediately. In 2011, Mullen, a marketing company located in Boston, Massachusetts, developed a series of print and television advertisements featuring the Roomba, a robotic vacuum cleaner, and other affiliated products in a campaign meant to showcase the cutting-edge technology of iRobot. Products like the ever-popular Roomba robotic vacuum to military robots used in Afghanistan showcased this exciting, innovative brand. Robotic vacuum cleaners may seem a long way away from post-9/11 literary representations of spies and 'terrorists'.
