ABSTRACT

This article is part of a series that aims to better understand the people behind the names we see in journals and conference papers, by examining their careers, motivations, and life histories. What follows is an edited con versation with Monica Lee who, at the time of writing, was a Life Member of Lancaster University, as well as a visiting professor at the Northumbria University. She is a Chartered Psychologist and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (FCIPD). She was a founding mem ber of the University Forum for HRD, the founding editor of the Human Resource Development International (HRDI), and is founding editor of the

Routledge series Studies in HRD. Monica is a regular attendee at HRD con ferences around the world, and the award for the HRDI article of the year is named after her. She has written many influential articles. The conversations with Monica were conducted by phone on August 12 and 13, 2009. They were recorded, transcribed, and then edited to meet the word count limit for the journal. The editing retained the spirit and voice from the conversations, and the edited version was reviewed by Monica prior to publication.
