ABSTRACT

This chapter is divided into two parts. In the first, the framework of indirect realism is erected, the historical and theoretical backdrop against which the contemporary analysis of visual processing is conducted. In addition to setting the stage, the first part introduces and presents a thumbnail sketch of the principal characters, namely, those mechanisms that have assumed a central role in current interpretations of visual processing. With the second and larger part rests the responsibility of elaborating on the personalities and capabilities of several of these principal characters; to this purpose we describe in elementary but, it is hoped, sufficient detail, the methodology, findings. and intuitions that bear on these mechanisms of processing.
