ABSTRACT

The era of British reign was a revolutionary and intense one in the chronicles of the country and Jerusalem: the British delineated the political and administrative boundaries of the country, restored it from the physical ruins wrought by the First World War, and stimulated its economic development and modernization in many realms. The new tourism trends in British-ruled Palestine were clearly expressed in Jerusalem, and the mark of that period is still visible today. The British recognized the historical and international heritage of the city and its importance to members of the three monotheistic religions. The British Mandate era was a time of great change in Jerusalem. Alongside the improvements in transportation and infrastructure, many new buildings appeared. The Rockefeller Museum and the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) signaled a change in the city's cultural atmosphere, adding an aesthetic and modern element. The flourishing hotel industry was an important milestone in the development of the urban tourism infrastructure.
