ABSTRACT

Jazz began to flourish in Austria after World War II, especially in the British- and American-occupied zones, and modern jazz scenes evolved in the country’s two largest cities, Vienna and Graz. This eventually led to the establishment of jazz as an academic discipline in 1965 at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Graz, followed by the Vienna Conservatory three years later. Since then, the national jazz scene has rapidly grown to become an integral part of Austrian high culture.
