ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at all the issues relating to getting a plant built and running (the inputs in terms of time, money and effort) and the revenue streams; outputs, from an anaerobic digestion (AD) plant. The level of consideration given to the energy output of the AD plant may vary with the motivation that brought the plant about in the first place and the budget available. The AD plant can supply biogas that is dried and cleaned sufficiently to be used in a combined heat and power (CHP) unit. The chapter presents three steps to refining biogas to biomethane quality: scrubbing to remove CO2, hydrogen sulphide and trace gases; dehumidification; and compression. There are a number of downloadable biogas project calculators prepared by people interested in promoting biogas production, either free or at very low cost. The cost of running a plant may vary with the plant and there are too many variables to give meaningful estimates.
