ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book demonstrates a renewed and growing importance given to social protection as a human right and as a precondition for economic and social development. The case studies in this book serve to present diverse social protection initiatives, and share successful and emerging experiences among stakeholders on promising practices and areas for future development. The interconnections between economic policy and social policy are captured in a social development approach that calls for a holistic and transformative approach to eradicate poverty and to promote social inclusion. A critical social work approach demonstrates how the daily lives of individuals are linked to wider political, social, cultural and/or economic structures and systems. Social injustices such as poverty, social exclusion, inequalities, discrimination, oppression, abuse and exploitation are a key concern for social workers.
