Text-based lectures, whether in writing, audio, or video, are passive or receptive. There are many ways to create the kind of textured environment that keeps learners involved and interested. Before beginning with the presentation, students will have seen the introduction to the unit and the outcomes. A great deal of variety can be achieved by putting together a mix of different learning materials, including text-based segments, short readings, images, diagrams, or multimedia from the Web. In the best cases, mini-lectures are varied in design and presentation. Depending upon the content area, charts, photos, illustrations, links, and audio and video are used to create a textured, multifaceted environment. A sequence of drawings or descriptions of images with directions used to plan out shots for a video. The principle of componential analysis is that all words can be analyzed using a finite set of components.
