ABSTRACT

Moreover, the African Union has designated eight RECs4 as the base for Africa’s economic integration, while recognising another six5 as also being important (cf. Chapter 5 of this book). In connection to industrialisation, the schemes under the domination of panAfricanism can be divided into two distinct phases. The first phase includes those schemes that were launched between the late 1970s and the late 1980s, thus coinciding with the second and third post-colonial decades. The second phase comprises programmes initiated from the early 1990s onward, and therefore largely from the fourth post-colonial decade onward.
