ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in subsequent chapters of this book. The book has been written for beginning teachers of geography, those individuals who want to help the student and others can develop a love for learning geography. It demonstrates, the landscape of education is in a constant state of change as educational theory, educational policy and classroom practice slip and slide between different and often competing discourses. School geography is not what it was in the past and will change further during their own teaching career. Students are part of this community of practice the authors can call geography education and they encourage one to have agency and exert influence in their own classroom to begin with but potentially among their colleagues and beyond, using networks such as the Geographical Association. Learning to become a geography teacher is hard work and can be physically, emotionally and mentally exhausting.
