ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a narrative about Nicole Jones who is a graduate student in the Master of Social Work program at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Her narrative tells about her experiences of racism in its many forms, including wider cultural narratives and focus on structural inequalities. She relates her introduction to reflection in social work and opportunity it provides to examine her story in different ways. The field of social work was not Nicole first career choice. She comes from a journalism/public relations background filled with celebrity interviews, red carpet events, award shows and after parties. She wanted to be next Oprah Winfrey. As a black woman in society she was not supposed to be educated, articulate, cultured. Nicole started writing in a journal when she was in sixth grade and she has not stopped. Practicing social work has allowed Nicole to examine her story and compare it to the one that is already written for her by society.
