ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the development of reflective practice and making connections with back stories shaping its framework and activities. From reflection to critical reflection skips over other kinds of reflective processes evolving over time. One such process is reflection in action, when professionals think about what they are doing while they are doing it. On a basic level reflexivity is another way of thinking about reflection in action which occurs in the midst of practice. A number of useful models for reflection have been developed over the years. The work of Schon has been particularly influential in developing a model of reflective practice in professional training and education. Thinking about one's social position and where experiences place them in social divisions is all part of developing skills in reflection. The chapter discusses the themes of self-awareness, reflection and critical theory with connections to agency and voice to highlight the importance of context and everyday experiences set in narrative projects.
