ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a narrative which is presented by Frida Svensson from Sweden, as she gives a detailed account of her efforts moving through social work education and fieldwork in India. Frida Svensson is a 26-year-old Swedish social work student beginning her seventh and last semester at Gothenburg University. This narrative also chimes with the earlier narrative, in grappling with 'maps of meaning' in different contexts, bringing personal experiences, organizational and social work cultures and wider social elements to bear in everyday practice. In Sweden, the social work field is extremely broad and Frida had a difficult time finding where she might best fit in this profession. She undertook my field internship in Mumbai, India, in a nongovernmental organization. Self-determination was also one of the principles which remind the social worker that it is always the client's decision. Social worker, are not there to make the decisions for the client.
