ABSTRACT

This chapter is structured around three themes of practice for iPad-based arts and creative education in preschool settings. First theme is the children's use of the technologies should complement not supplant physical arts engagement, second is creating from scratch and third is quality learning that requires intervention and redirection by adults. The chapter also explores that for young children in preschool settings where iPads are present the experience of the live and digital is characterised by convergence. The employment of mobile digital technologies in preschools for the purpose of making and responding to artworks should not be a matter of the concrete activity over the digital one. The experiences can have a symbiotic relationship in which one embellishes the other. However participation with these devices should not be undertaken without consideration to the learning context, in this case a preschool setting, in which adult-supported, discovery and play-based pedagogical approaches are used.
