ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the actor-network theory as an appropriate theoretical framework and discusses the complex ways in which the introduction of a new technology such as the iPad creates a range of new ways for children to materially and conceptually participate in preschool spaces. It also discusses three central actors or groups of actors established in the preschools through the introduction of the iPads for the project. The chapter focuses on the affordances of the device and the ways in which the iPads were deployed in the preschools to invite the children to interact with and mobilise them in particular ways. It then discusses the ways in which the teachers negotiated the iPads as they attempted to manage the introduction of the devices into their preschools. Finally, the chapter discusses the ways in which the iPads became networked into preschool spaces and came to coexist with a range of other human and non-human actors.
