Introduction In this chapter we describe social phenomena that play a part in the initial stages of polarization and radicalization of intergroup attitudes and behaviour. Prejudice, economic deprivation, discrimination and isolation are particularly important because they can pose a threat to the individual and/or the group he or she belongs to. These perceived threats are central to the first part of this book, and their nature and consequences are described in more detail in Chapter 3 .
