Introduction In the previous chapter, we described how members of ethnic minority groups often find themselves in a relatively disadvantageous social environment. Confronted with hostile stereotypes and prejudice, their contacts with the majority population are not always positive. Social deprivation can further exacerbate the situation. These circumstances do not leave them unmoved; in these situations, minorities are likely to feel under threat, with all the cognitive and emotional consequences that can have.
