ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the wider role of becoming a physical education teacher. It addresses issues such as the physical education teacher's pastoral responsibility, being a health educator, the teaching of accredited courses in physical education across the 14-18 age range and being a sports coach. The chapter also highlights alternative career pathways for physical education teachers within the education system, such as becoming a pastoral leader and a senior manager. Kathleen Armour and Jones have observed that as physical education teachers progress through their careers they are increasingly faced with decisions which could effectively relocate them in administrative roles as opposed to their teaching roles. For many physical education teachers, a career paradox emerges which puts them in a 'no-win' situation. Irrespective of the routes into management, one thing that is certain is that the pastoral care of pupils will be a requirement that all schools will have of all teachers.
