ABSTRACT

With the rapid expansion of research and policy interest in migration over the last two decades there has been a significant paradigm shift, which has considerably informed our understanding of the recent migration process and its effects. The aim of this chapter is to examine the long-term trends of Italian migration to Australia according to this theoretical framework, within the international context and focussing on the last two decades. Analysing the most recent data – both those collected by Istat (Italy) and by Diac (Australia) – this research identifies a new wave of Italian emigration that is heading to Australia, highlighting the features and linking it to the recent economic crisis, particularly hard within Italy.
