ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the impact of European Union's (EU's) negotiating attitudes, positions, policies or interests on the shaping of the climate regime. It then focuses on the EU as a negotiator in international climate negotiations. The book provides a detailed historical record of EU involvement in UNFCCC negotiations (1986-2009). Furthermore, the added value of having such a record is that it can be used by anyone wishing to explore a particular period of EU engagement without having to go through a wide range of sources. The book also provides a historical analysis which aims to assess longitudinally the strengths and weaknesses of the EU as a negotiator in the context of the UNFCCC. It seeks to not only find out what happened in the past, but also to reveal the reasons why events occurred the way they did.
