ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we begin by considering briefly the intersection of ideas about participation that underlie current support for a participatory approach to design in the school context before examining some possible methods for facilitating this. We do this through presenting a case study of research work conducted by each of us in quite different educational settings. Although we have never worked together, we may each have been influenced by the approach of the other and by the current context for participation in UK schools. Certainly it is notable that we both favour the use of visual images to mediate discussions about the environment. Reflection on the experiences reported in the case studies should allow us to draw out the benefits and challenges of participation in general and of our particular approaches.
