ABSTRACT

To understand the Chinese approach to real estate development, this chapter stresses the importance of political and historical change that has affected all economic activity in the country and its impact beyond its borders. In physical and visual change, all sectors of the real estate industry have certainly been involved in the rapid urbanization and development in its cities. The mechanisms involved, sites of changes, and the stakeholders involved in its implementation are all considered here to enable some view on the outcomes of Chinese real estate development. The in-depth data-driven research in this chapter draws support from the National Social Science Foundation of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the Programme for Changjiang Scholars and Innovative Research Team at Nankai University (PCSIRT) in China. Further acknowledgements are given to Ya Li, Yang Zhao, Rong Han and Konghong Li from Nankai University. The political and economic transition that has unfolded in China can certainly draw from the real estate industry whilst simultaneously contributing to continued development.
