ABSTRACT

This chapter details how competition can be conceptualised. The chapter describes an audience influences athletes performances. Marten's model helps to explain why people react differently to the same competitive event. In light of Martens model presented above, the actual competitive situation equates to the objective competitive situation. Trait competitiveness equates to a personal characteristic that influences how athletes interpret the objective situation. Murayama and Elliot conducted a second meta-analysis and three additional studies with university students to obtain support for their claim that competition has an indirect relationship with task performance. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes life skills as cognitive, emotional, interpersonal and social abilities that allow individuals to deal effectively with the challenges and demands of everyday life. People who have coached will typically testify that even when not keeping score, such as in warm-up games in team sports, players are often still comparing each other in some way based around their competence in the activity.
