ABSTRACT

This chapter accounts story in academia in the US Southwest. After an analysis of the procedures most US universities require for tenure and data regarding faculty in academia, chapter shares testimonio of going up for tenure, along with recommendations and consejos for all faculty along the tenure-track process. Testimonio in Spanish means to bear truthful witness, to testify, to denounce oppressive acts and to be acknowledged as a living witness and target of social injustice. All universities have several steps to follow for promotion and tenure (P&T). P&T is based on three areas: research, teaching, and service. Each field and discipline has its own journals, conferences, and organizations to promote mainstream scholarship grounded in White values, ideas and knowledge such as individualism and careerism as opposed to collectivism and a sense of obligation to the community. In many universities including the Border University, higher standards are placed on research and scholarly publications in top academic journals.
