ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to argue that new media is not just a platform for providing a new mode of communication. Indeed, as evidenced by the Iran presidential election in 2009 and the political movement of Arab Spring in 2010, the power of new media can facilitate political action. In these movements, however, the strong anti-government attitude had already been there and what was needed was an efficacious means for calling upon the people to come out. The role new media played in this series of political action was an alternative means supplementary to the traditional modes of communication.
