ABSTRACT

Wind-power generation continues to make steady inroads in the global power market. There has been a significant uptick in new projects in China and the US, while new markets in Latin America, Asia and Africa continue to pick up speed. Some of the wind-turbine manufacturers that were in serious trouble in 2012 and 2013, particularly Vestas, the biggest company in the sector, continue to see their fortunes revive and are beginning to speed up their investments once again. Widespread consolidation among wind-turbine manufacturers is finally occurring. The MHI, Vestas Offshore joint venture was formally launched on 1 April 2014 and seemed to be making steady progress in becoming a heavyweight competitor to Siemens. But the really big news has been the protracted battle between General Electric and Siemens to take over France's Alstom, which resulted in approval in June and success for GE.
