ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the activities carried out by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) on energy-related issues, underlining the importance and the key role of parliamentarians, in their capacity of policymakers, in support of cooperation in legislative matters at the regional level. PAM is the centre of excellence for regional parliamentary diplomacy and is a unique forum whose membership is open exclusively to Mediterranean countries, which are represented on equal footing. The PAM has tackled energy-related issues through the work of its 2nd Standing Committee, dedicated to Economic, Social and Environmental issues. The main focus of the standing committee dealt with climate change, sustainable development, non-traditional mechanisms to provide funds for energy enterprises and efficient energy use and nuclear energy cooperation. The first organization to be granted the status of observer to PAM was Mediterranean Energy Regulators (MEDREG), a key partner for PAM in the energy sector.
