ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the experiences of refugee women resettled in the US and explores the ways in which feminist approaches may enhance social work practice with them. It considers few aspects of feminist theory, articulates their implications for social work practice with refugees, and seeks to weave theory with practice. The chapter examines the complexity of causes and experiences of forced migration, focusing particularly on aspects that pertain to women. The social work profession plays a key role in supporting refugee women as they navigate and respond to their shifting circumstances during resettlement in the US. The foundation of any refugee resettlement agency is the provision of case management services related to basic needs, employment and complex medical issues. Familiarity with causes and experiences of forced migration as well as the responses of the global refugee regime can directly enhance the quality of social work practice.
