ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that engagement with the social policy process is integral to social work and that the application of a feminist lens can assist in critical analysis of social policies and informs actions that are consistent with social work's commitment to promoting human rights and social justice. It provides examples of the ways in which the application of a critical feminist lens can strengthen social work's contribution to social policy process. The chapter describes a research project that explored the impacts of these policies from the perspectives of women attempting to establish safe post-separation parenting arrangements through the family law system in a context of domestic violence. Feminist policy analysis is commonly associated with policies that are readily identified as vitally concerned with women's equality and well-being, such as domestic violence, equal pay and child care. Policies shape the roles and practices of social workers as they implement policies 'at the frontline'.
