ABSTRACT
Making experiential education deep, pervasive, and integrated on college and university campuses is no doubt a substantial challenge. Almost everything about the pedagogical approach runs counter to longstanding structures, mindsets, and systems in higher education. This can sometimes make the work overwhelming to the faculty member or administrator championing experiential education at the local level. But in a conversation the author had with Marc Schlossberg, one of the founders of the Sustainable Cities Initiative at the University of Oregon, he said he lives by the mantra of just get started. One can feel paralyzed by all the changes that must take place in the academy for experiential education to truly be integrated across all sectors of an institution. However, that complexity should not stop everyone from just getting started. Starting small and relatively easy initiatives and changes is, in fact, what just about every campus that is now known for experiential education did at some point.
