ABSTRACT

The consequences of parenting are significant and manifold. While people may underestimate its importance, believe it is a low-level concern, and treat it as a nonpriority, parenting in fact is fundamental to the most critical issues with which societies consciously concern themselves. Parenting directly impacts a human being's lifelong sense of morality. Ironically, many people throughout history and today have applied the concept that parenting impacts a child's morality in an upside-down fashion. Scientists have shown through numerous studies that violent parenting does not turn children into healthy, moral, or intelligent adults. Certain individuals who have been subjected to a great deal of corporal punishment as children live their lives in a state of chronic physical pain. Corporal punishment specifically has been proven to lead to lower IQ levels and to lower scores on other tests of cognitive development. A child subject to mistreatment will thus often grow up to be an adult with lower intelligence levels and cognitive strength.
