ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the students with aspects of positive psychology. One of the goals of positive psychology is to advance knowledge about how to help people increase their level of happiness, positive mental health and personal thriving. Seligman talks about the importance of using our so-called 'signature strengths' or 'character strengths'. Students are introduced to the notion of character strengths and also asked to consider their own strengths. This is particularly important as once they have identified these strengths they will be able to work out when they can best use them in order to cope with adversity and sort out difficult situations and problems that they may encounter particularly at the point of transition to secondary school. Once again the facilitator can discuss this information sheet with the students identifying how these strengths might be used. This can be done by asking the students to think about a time when they have used the strength of creativity.
